If you have a hard time thinking about what the game is all about, it might help if you think that it less as a game and more as a toy. In contrast to traditional games, there are not a lot of preset goals or steps to take in Minecraft. It is is the modern digital equivalent of Legos. But it is like building something out of Lego, anything your heart desires. Minecraft is addictive in nature. You become addictive to the game because Minecraft is a medium for you to express raw, unfiltered creativity and creativity has no limit. You cannot quit the game unless all of you exhaust all your creativity.

What is a lead in Minecraft?

Minecraft features two distinct modes: survival and creative. Survival mode is the traditional game. At the start of the game, you discovered in a randomly generated world and have to collect the essentials required to survive. And here comes the lead. A lead which name is a leash is an item added in the 1.6 updates for Minecraft. The lead is used to tie any passive mob (including baby villagers) to a fence post. 4 strings and a slimeball crafted the game.

The main use of the lead is to tie horses to post so that they cannot run away. You can also tie any mob with the lead. To rope, the mob, simply right click the mob with the lead in hand and it will be roped. The mob will follow a player which is similar to animals following a player with their desired food, for example, pigs with carrots, sheep with wheat, chicken with seeds.

The lead will expand up to its maximum length of ten blocks before breaking and dropped for reuse upon collecting. But when the lead breaks down, the mob would free to roam once again.

Multiple mobs may be roped at one time and the limit is at least seven mobs. Leads are also used in gallows. But this usage is less common. Some players used to build tall fence posts and tie mobs to the very top, forcing them to suspend in the air. The mobs will bounce up and down until they close enough to the ground and would repeatedly hit the ground till dead.

Some trivia on lead

  • Prior to update 1.6.1 looking away from the animal connected to player’s lead resulted in the lead to become invisible. But looking at the mob made the lead reappear.
  • Killing mobs which are tied to a fence post with the lead cause the lead to disappear with the mob.
  • All peaceful mobs, for example, sheep, cows can have leads on. So, you need to use leads for making a good farm.
  • The lead has much resemblance with a lasso. This may be a reason it appears to be tied to an animal’s neck.

Why leads are required?

You can use leads either to lead mobs around or to tie them to fenceposts. It works on most passive mobs, for example, all animals except bats, but no hostile mobs. Just right-click to attach the lead to a mob. You can then lead the animal around or tie it to a fence-post.

How to make a lead?

Items you need to make a lead in Minecraft:

  • 4 strings
  • 1 Slimball

Using the above two materials you can make a lead. You can also use another 4 strings and 1 ball to make other leads too. Follow below steps correctly to make a lead.

Create a crafting table

create crafting table

First of all, you have to create a crafting table. But if you already have a crafting table proceed to the next step.

To create a crafting table, you need 4 wood planks. Use any kind of wood plank. Put any wood block in the crafting grid to get wood planks. If things are that you have enough wood planks put them at all blocks of the 2×2 crafting grid. You will then have a crafting table at the right-side box. Now move the crafting table at your hotbar and place on the ground.

Collect string

As stated above string is the first thing that you need to make a lead. So, how to collect string? Kill spider! The spider is mostly visible at night. If your searching result yields nothing after searching mile and mile, you can set time tonight using this code: /time set night. If you still don’t get the spider, run this code in Minecraft /summon spider. A spider will swap around you immediately.

Soon after finding him, start attacking him relentlessly. When you hit the spider, it will turn red that means it is absorbing the attack. At the end of your onslaught, the spider will die and disappear leaving a string on the ground. So, collect the string before it lost. However, there are chances that you may get spider eye instead of a string.

Start collecting slimeball

Since you cannot make a slimeball, you have to collect it. How? Like you kill a spider for string similarly,  you can get slimeball by killing slime. Slime is a moving mob that looks like a green square box. Start finding slime around you. Usually, they spotted on swamped biome. Also, they are found in the night. If you still face difficulty finding them, run this code: /summon slime.

If you get it, do not delay to hit it because it will also try to attack you. After killing a slime, it will generate medium sized slime and try to attack you again. When you kill the medium-sized slime, instantly you will get more slimes. Start hitting them all until they die and leave slimeball on the ground. Collect the slimeball and proceed to create lead.

How to craft a lead on crafting table?

Make a lead on crafting table

Ok now, open the crafting table that you have created earlier so that you have the 3×3 crafting grid that looks like this:

When making a lead, it is important that the strings and slimeball are placed in the exact pattern like the below image. It means that in the first row there should be 1 string in the first box and 1 string in the second box.

In the second row, place 1 string in the first box, and 1 slimeball in the second box. In the third row, place 1 string in the third box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a lead. A lead will appear at the right sided box. Move it over the last row (Hotbar) of your inventory.

Use a lead on a horse

Find a horse: once you have created a lead, find a horse in the game. Horses are usually seen in the plains biome. If you are facing difficulty to find a horse, you can summon a wild horse by running this code in the Minecraft /summon horse.

Leash the horse: now leash the horse so that it cannot roam free. Firstly, select the lead in the hot bar. Then tie one end of the lead to the horse. The game control differs version to version of Minecraft. For example, for windows 10 right click on the horse but a command for the Xbox controller is pressing the LT button

Now you should see that one end of the lead tied around the horse’s neck and the other end of the lead in your hand. While you are holding the Minecraft leash in your hand, you can fully control the horse’s movement.

Unleash the horse

You can untie the lead from the horse to free it anytime you want. And again the game control to unleash the horse depends on the version of Minecraft

Tie the horse to a fence

Let us show you how to tie the horse to a fence so that it cannot roam free. While one end of the lead tied around the horse’s neck and the other end of the lead in your hand, position your pointer on one of the fence posts. The game control to tie the lead to the fence vary depending on the version of Minecraft.

Conclusion

Minecraft is different from other video games because playing the game can mean something different to each player. The appeal of these digital Legos is expansive and infinite. The game appeals do not limit to any gender or any age group. It is a game designed to apply your maximum creativity.
